The NeoBlack Cinema 10

1. I wish someone had told me… to never doubt myself, although I don’t anymore and learned from my mistakes, I think I would be much further in my carreer.

2. Don’t listen when people say, “The world isn’t ready for that.” And when I say “that” I mean your vision, ideas and personality. Usually when people say these dream killing words it is out of their own fear of failure. What makes a brilliant woman or man brilliant is following through all the way with his/her non-conforming vision!

3. The biggest part of the battle is… getting knocked down! When we are on our road to success  many obstacles and bumps get in our way and can sometimes make the road seem endless, and our vision seem unobtainable. But if you stay persistent and not let failure keep you down, a door will open and move you closer to your dreams.

4. If I could change one thing… I would change the structure of the education system. I would ensure our African American and Latino children learn more about the credit system and how to own their own business. This needs to be implemented into our public and private school systems to teach our people at a young age what this country thrives off of and how they can have a piece of the pie instead of becoming a statistic.

5. New York or LA? Definitely NEW YORK BABY! Everything you need is at your fingertips.

6. Film School or no film school? Everybody’s different. Life is what you make it and also what you’re blessed with. Some need to go to film school because they want to be taught in a specific format or have no other means of learning about film. Others go guerilla style and buy a camera and start shooting to teach themselves and surround themselves with experienced filmmaker’s. It all depends on you!

7. 3 Most Influential/favorite films of all time…Wow! I wish I could pick at least  15..Definitley  the film CRASH-Because it captured the reality of humanity and our raw opinions on race, status,  life’s obstacles, ignorance and highlights both views on these issues. It leaves you questioning yourself,  if you have been actually living life or allowing society to live life for you?

Scarface- It is the most brilliantly written, directed and acted modern tragedy story for me because it touches all of the key emotions. It’s amazing how we wanted the bad guy to succeed so forcefully but the film could not be such a classic with out Tony’s death@ the end. The audience understands why he had to die! When you can capture life like that on screen and take those risks and that journey, that is when you have produced a classic!

Malcolm X-The movie Denzel Washington should have gotten an Oscar for! One of the best biopics of all time.  It educated us on who this man truly was and what he stood for.  Spike lee not only captured the essence of one of our great leaders, but never missed a beat! It not only influenced me in acting and directing but to read more about our black leaders including Zora Neale Hurston, Langston Hughes, August Wilson, Marcus Garvey and many more.

8. If I wasn’t a filmmaker I’d be… A dancer. Dance is my second love. I take hip-hop, jazz salsa and African classes when I can.

9. Most important lesson… I’ve learned is to go with your intuition.

10. What I want you to know … is life is nothing without peace, being spiritual is the best thing that ever happened to me. It keeps me balance and helps me make great decisions in life!

The Black Shorts 10

1. I wish someone had told me… that it takes years to build a foundation of people that you can trust and depend on to succeed in this business. Actually I’ve learned this early on so I’m just passing along some advice to those with high expectations.

2. Don’t listen when people say… just give up. Either they’re bitter, don’t want you to succeed in life or good friends testing your will power.

3. The biggest part of the battle… is dealing with rejection and staying self-motivated. If you can learn how to deal with rejection and keep yourself striving towards your goals no matter the obstacles. Then you have already won half the battle.

4. If I could change one thing… it would be to make people stop forgetting where they come from. You we’re given a helping hand along the way so you should reach back and not shut the door completely closed to those who deserve a chance.

5. New York or LA? Both! LA is my peace of mind while NY is my hungry grind.

6. Film School or no film school? Film school is great because you learn the technical side of things for a costly price, but in this day in age of do it yourself, you can get hands on training by working on sets as a personal assistant, reading books and learning from mistakes with your own camera.

7. 3 most influential films of all time to my career are City of God, Don Cheadle’s performance in Devil In A Blue Dress and Precious.

8. If I wasn’t a filmmaker I’d be… still in the entertainment business somewhere as a creative force of nature.

9. Most important lesson is… to never give up. Even if you fall off the horse, you must always get back on it and keep moving forward even if you are wounded.

10. What I want you to know… that even if you get an agent and manager, that your still your own agent and manager. This is a business so you must learn the business as well as go out there and create your own opportunities.

The NeoBlack Cinema 10

1. I wish someone had told me… the journey was this fun. To me, the risk of failure and evidence of success for these projects, auditions, and songs have been an eye opener and so much fun. I’ve met some of the most beautiful people because like me they run with the intent to fly.

2. Don’t listen when people say… that’s how it’s worked since the beginning of time. Me and my friend Preston Taylor always talk about Galileo. Fifty years later he was proven right. The world was round and to follow the stars can lead you to the right “America.”

3. The biggest parts of the battle is… persistence and networking. Stick with it and meet people. I’m not saying kiss everyone’s (blank) but remember like you anyone can be anyone someday. But, also remember even if you had a bad experience with people sometimes all it takes is an apology and a conversation… So, don’t kill yourself if you pissed someone off. People get pissed off everyday.

4. If I could change one thing… I’d create a fearless industry unafraid to take risks. Movies have only been around since the turn of the last century and I hear many black artists and producers (including myself at one point) saying there’s not enough work and Hollywood does not want to cast us. 1. Give them a reason to cast you. 2. If the role fits your type – send in regardless of race, what can they say no. 3. Convince the people around you to create, create, create with the utmost professionalism and you’ll be where you want to be.

5. New York or LA… New York, LA, London, Chicago, Atlanta. Wherever I’m working that project. But, to live, New York. The energy is not comparable.

6. Film School or no film school… school builds connects. no school builds experience. Persistence in either direction will get you there. There is a formula, but the variables are interchangeable.

7. 3 Most Influential/ favorite films of all time:

Most influential, West Side Story, Color Purple, and Precious.    Favorite: The Lost Boys, Bamboozled, Poetic Justice

8. If I wasn’t a filmmaker I’d be… a filmmaker’s apprentice.

9. Most important lesson… As well as yourself, Believe in someone else.

10. What I want you to know… I want you to know, read books, but don’ believe everything you read. The script is first, but just like a painter you decide the stroke; and if you mess up, finish the painting. And last, come in knowing how far you can go and will go, and watch it change, because anything that does not change does not grow. And anything that does not grow is dead. And Oh, Yeah… my web site is OheneCornelius.com.
