The NeoBlack Cinema 10
1. I wish someone had told me… the journey was this fun. To me, the risk of failure and evidence of success for these projects, auditions, and songs have been an eye opener and so much fun. I’ve met some of the most beautiful people because like me they run with the intent to fly.
2. Don’t listen when people say… that’s how it’s worked since the beginning of time. Me and my friend Preston Taylor always talk about Galileo. Fifty years later he was proven right. The world was round and to follow the stars can lead you to the right “America.”
3. The biggest parts of the battle is… persistence and networking. Stick with it and meet people. I’m not saying kiss everyone’s (blank) but remember like you anyone can be anyone someday. But, also remember even if you had a bad experience with people sometimes all it takes is an apology and a conversation… So, don’t kill yourself if you pissed someone off. People get pissed off everyday.
4. If I could change one thing… I’d create a fearless industry unafraid to take risks. Movies have only been around since the turn of the last century and I hear many black artists and producers (including myself at one point) saying there’s not enough work and Hollywood does not want to cast us. 1. Give them a reason to cast you. 2. If the role fits your type – send in regardless of race, what can they say no. 3. Convince the people around you to create, create, create with the utmost professionalism and you’ll be where you want to be.
5. New York or LA… New York, LA, London, Chicago, Atlanta. Wherever I’m working that project. But, to live, New York. The energy is not comparable.
6. Film School or no film school… school builds connects. no school builds experience. Persistence in either direction will get you there. There is a formula, but the variables are interchangeable.
7. 3 Most Influential/ favorite films of all time:
Most influential, West Side Story, Color Purple, and Precious. Favorite: The Lost Boys, Bamboozled, Poetic Justice
8. If I wasn’t a filmmaker I’d be… a filmmaker’s apprentice.
9. Most important lesson… As well as yourself, Believe in someone else.
10. What I want you to know… I want you to know, read books, but don’ believe everything you read. The script is first, but just like a painter you decide the stroke; and if you mess up, finish the painting. And last, come in knowing how far you can go and will go, and watch it change, because anything that does not change does not grow. And anything that does not grow is dead. And Oh, Yeah… my web site is OheneCornelius.com.
